Pervasa, Inc. today announced their award winning service oriented sensor platform – Atlas, is featured as an enabling technology for the STEPSTONE Project lead by IBM and the Eclipse Open Healthcare Framework (OHF) Project. The core of the new technology is a robust service oriented device architecture (SODA) and a network computing platform, which is a plug and play solution that enables businesses to easily deploy devices and integrate them into their enterprise systems with little or no programming. With Atlas, Pervasa is now providing one of the critical ingredients to the next phase of M2M and device integration: a low cost infrastructure enabling open standards for commercial use.

Atlas, the core platform, is the result of vigorous research and development efforts by researchers and students led by Dr. Sumi Helal, a professor of computer engineering at the University of Florida and founder of Pervasa. Offered exclusively by Pervasa, Inc., the technology includes both middleware and universal sensor interface adaptors (known as the Atlas sensor platform) for the enablement of deployment, management, and programmability of sensors and other devices necessary for operation within several verticals including HealthCare, fleet management, asset tracking, energy, military, and security markets.

Real World Test Environment: The Gator Tech Smart Home

Dr. Helal and his team have been engaged with the Gator Tech Smart Home effort for several years working to create an environment that assists the elderly in normal day to day living. The home includes features such as a “Smart Floor” and “Smart Wave” – the former being able to track the activity of the owners and the latter which helps the elderly prepare and cook their meals – two key concerns in homes of the growing number of elderly living alone today. All of which, are ‘intelligently’ tracked and reported back to those individuals needing such information including loved-ones and, of course, medical practitioners. These applications and several other features of the home are enabled by the use of the Atlas sensor platform and the Atlas middleware. The Smart Home is accessible online at http://www.icta.ufl.edu/gatortech/index2.html.

What’s different about this Smart Home from other commercial efforts is that it has proven to be affordable and easily upgradeable with minimal effort on behalf of supporting manufacturers and its inhabitants. It’s not something from an amusement park, rather, a prototype for the very near future “Smart Home in a Box” – all based on Pervasa technology.

“The STEPSTONE Project should take the Gator Tech Smart Home to the next level, and into reality” commented Dr. Helal during his appearance at the IEEE COMPSAC Conference in China. “The current Pervasa offering provides companies with everything necessary to succeed in deploying smart sensors. The Atlas platform can be purchased as a stand-alone kit for educational programs or licensed for integration to existing enterprises – it’s ready and Fortune 500 companies are starting to take advantage of the powerful service oriented architecture it provides.”

Noted by several analysts, the market opportunities for machine to machine (M2M) computing is just now beginning to take off. With estimated numbers of connected devices hitting in the billions, solutions necessary to tie them together in a meaningful and painless way are required; and Pervasa is one of the leaders offering intelligent solutions to succeed in this vast market.
